I think that he has FULLY recovered!!!
What an eventful few days.
Surgery day: We arrived at the hospital at about 6:15. They did surgery about 8:30. Cooper had some trouble coming out of from anesthesia. We weren’t called back for quite a while. Finally, they called us back and he was really out of it. Jut angry that we were trying to get him to wake up and drink. After about 15 minutes, they moved us to our room.
Cooper had an IV on one hand, a blood pressure monitor on one leg, a oxygen saturation/pulse rate monitor on the other leg, and an oxygen mask on his face. Not to mention, they had an ice pack on his neck to keep down the swelling. The dr. said that the surgery went well. New tubes in, scraped the re-grown adenoid tissue and took both tonsils. She said the tonsils were just huge and he must have felt like he had been breathing through a straw.
After being in the room for about 10 minutes, Cooper just looked like he was struggling to get enough air. His chest would sink in every time he went to take a breath. The nurse called the for anesthesia to come down twice. We tried to get him to wake up and cough to get some of the mucus out. His oxygen levels were dropping to 88 (should be above 94) and his heart rate was getting as high as 166. They sent two ladies to do two chest X-rays. Poor little man was still having sunken chest when he was breathing. I AM GETTING REALLY WORRIED AT THIS POINT! We can not get him to wake up to cough or really respond to much. FINALLY, he coughed and got rid of about 1/3 of a cup of mucus! Praise the LORD! He began to breath a little better, but still not normal. The anesthesiologist came in to check on him. She said that as soon as they put the tube in to perform his surgery and expanded his lungs, it mobilized all his congestion…which is good, but also bad in that it caused him to have labored breathing. We got him to wake up long enough to each some ice cream and a little macaroni. He managed to spill about 3/4 of his pain medication on his robe, so he did not get much for the first dose. The day got a little better by the evening. Pawpaw and Nana came to visit, but Cooper was sleeping most of that time. He wanted more macaroni and we were able to give him all his pain meds. However, about an hour later, he “got ride” of all of his food and meds. NOT GOOD, and he still had not gone to the bathroom. A MESS! Julia and Lawson came to visit. They both got to eat a popsicle, but Cooper still was too drugged to care. He had to wear his oxygen mast, and was very uncomfortable.
The night was rough. Every time he would try to move, he would just get tangled in all of his wires and tubing. I moved to the chair, Scott was on the futon, and Coop had the bed. Every hour or so, I would have to get up and rub his back to get him back to sleep.
DAY TWO: He got up about 5:00 and immediately wanted breakfast. We had some eggs and some popsicles. He seemed to be feeling better. But, with feeling better also comes wanting EVERYTHING off. No more tubes and wires. We went on quite a few walks around the floor. They wanted to wait to decide if they were going to discharge him by seeing if he could keep down food and medicine. The dr. would not release him until she had ordered another chest x-ray and talked with the radiologist. We were released about 1:00. By, the evening, pain had set in. He did not want our popsicles because, of course, they did not look exactly like the ones at the hospital. I decided to take another day off. He seemed to be in pain.
Day THREE: He slept until 8:45, 2 1/2 hours later than normal. He needed the rest. He has been very good today. I don’t think that he is drinking enough, but no fever. I have spread out the pain medicine a little bit since he is doing okay. Every 6 hours instead of every 4. He even ran around the living room saying he was crazy this evening. DOING WELL.
I will go back to school tomorrow. Nana and PawPaw will keep Coop. My mom will be here next Tuesday to keep him the rest of the week.
Thanks KIM, AMY, and CARRIE for the dinners. That has helped a TON! I feel blessed and loved.

That must have been so scary in the hospital...poor little man :(. It is hard seeing a loved one sick in the hospital..worse when it is your little boy. I'm so glad to hear that he is doing better!
